Overview
Inadequate equine health support available in the past in the country caused considerable adverse effects on equine production programmes. This necessitated the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to establish a premier species-oriented institute exclusively dedicated to the development of equines in India.
The National Research Centre on Equines (NRCE) was established during the 7th Five-Year Plan under the aegis of ICAR for research on equine health and production, considering the importance of equines in India.
Initial Establishment
After the initial joining of the Project Director at ICAR Headquarters on 26th November, 1985, the Centre was established to strengthen research and health support for equines.
Operational at Hisar
The Centre became operational at Hisar on 7th January, 1986 for conducting research and providing effective health coverage for equines.
Sub-Campus at Bikaner
A sub-campus at Bikaner, Rajasthan was created in 1989 for research aimed at improving technologies for optimizing reproduction and work performance of equines.
Mandate and Responsibility
The Centre is responsible for the generation of technologies aimed at augmenting equine performance and productivity. Its research and development efforts are directed towards improving equine health, reproduction and work efficiency, thereby contributing to the upliftment of the socio-economic status of poor equine owners.
