VTCC NETWORK UNIT

National Centre for Veterinary Type Cultures (NCVTC), Hisar has been mandated to act as the Coordinating Centre for the repository of microbes of animal origin, comprising veterinary, rumen and dairy microbes. The activities include isolation, characterization, conservation, maintenance, and distribution of these microbes for their utilization in animal health and production.

So far, a total of 3403 microbial resources have been deposited in the NCVTC repository after authentication, conventional and molecular characterization using advanced techniques such as GC-FAME and sequence analysis of 16S rRNA and other virulence genes.

These microbes have been isolated as well as received as deposits from 16 network units, including veterinary, rumen and dairy network units, along with other ICAR institutes and State Agricultural and Veterinary Universities.

These cultures and clones include veterinary pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, bacteriophages, clones, rumen microbes comprising anaerobic bacteria, fungi, Methanogenic Archeae, and dairy microbes. The Centre is also maintaining various cell lines.

More than 70 genera of bacteria are represented in the NCVTC repository, including some novel taxa, 13 families of viral pathogens and bacteriophages of various families. Besides, dairy cultures have been categorised as exopolysaccharide producing and bio-protective cultures such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus, L. plantarum, and L. paracasei based on their functional characteristics.
